Here is the music video I made for my band Lovely Little Girls. It's our 'hit' Massive Vulva Cantaloupe...Magma as channeled through Kool Keith, maybe? Joe Jackson meets The Contortions? There is much face flapping, awesome horn arrangements and plenty of cantaloupe abuse here.

Lovely Little Girls at The Burlington in Chicago with Cool Devices and Hot Garbage

We will have a 9-piece band! Trombone! Sax! Singers! The Burlington is at 3425 W. Fullerton. Show starts at 9:30. We will be recording in April.

Lovely Little Girls - Poor Fitted Boys/Pressed Face Downwards/I'm So Good Looking!

Here is a video of our performance at the Empty Bottle on Friday- a two camera shoot of a suite of songs: Poor-Fitted Boys/Pressed Face Downwards/You Fuck Me Anyway. I am very excited about this fantastic lineup that features guitarist Jim Cooper (Detholz!), keyboardist Jon Beavo (Hot Garbage), drummer Charlie Werber (Guzzlemug, Murmur), saxophonist Cory Bengtsen, and backup singers Carmen Armillas (Cheer-Accident) and Sacha Mullin. Our next show is at Cobra Lounge with Arriver on January 13th.

Lovely Little Girls at the Empty Bottle 12/16/11

Alex Perkolup and I have resurrected our old band Lovely Little Girls. We collected an amazing batch of Chicago musicians to perform our suite of songs entitled "Cleaning the Filth From a Delicate Frame" that we have been working on for the past couple years. We will be playing tomorrow at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. My favorite Chicago music writer Monica Kendrick wrote a great piece on the reformation and upcoming show in this week's Chicago Reader.



I have also put our two CDs up on Bandcamp for free download.

Fatty Jubbo at Club Sashay Tonight!

Club Sashay is a project from Drew Ziegler and Randal Bailey where they transform a space into their aesthetic and claustrophobic garbage pile. This time Club Sashay takes place at Reversible Eye gallery (1101 N. California) and I will be performing within the aggregated shambles. This is my first musical performance in a couple years and it is the 'soft-premiere' of the music Alex Perkolup and I have been working on for, uh, the last couple years.



Also performing tonight: Forced into Femininity, Phrogclock and Fancy Space people. Fancy Space People feature Don Bolles from the Germs and Nora Keyes from the Centimeters. It's a glam rock supergroup.



Drew and Randal will also be performing their absurdist DADA garbage-opera TANKKBOX VS TURTLE POWDER. I missed the premier of it this last summer but I heard it's an orgasmic train wreck.

I am will be reading 'Love Letters' at Quimby's in Chicago on Saturday the 21st at 7pm. Come celebrate the Rapture by listening to the sweet dulcet tones of my voice. The event is a book release show for Dan Gleason's new collection of short stories 'Dear Sweetness'. The night will also feature readings by Mike McPadden, Marc Arcuri, Gabriel Wallace.

Quimby's is located at 1854 W. North in Wicker Park, Chicago.

I am currently digging through my file cabinet, scanning old work and documentation for a group show curated by Temporary Services called Designated Drivers. It will essentially be the last ten years of my creative life on a 4 gig flash drive. I'll post more about the show as it approaches.

Chicago Grotesque: Bitter Tears, Lovely Little Girls, Pussy Pirates

My band, Lovely Little Girls, will be playing a free show at the Empty Bottle on Monday November 17th. We will have a five piece brass section playing with us. Horn tooters include Mike Hagedorn on trombone, Rob Pleshar on Tuba, Thymme Jones and Jeff Liebershire on trumpets and our own Doug Abram on sax. Also joining us will be singer Right Eye Rita as well as our new bassist Kevin Cribbin. We are honored to have these weird and fine folks playing with us. It is sure to be a fantastic show!



The night is something I put together of "Grotesque Music"...a loose definition for bands that mutate familiar styles into disconcerting forms through lyrics, performance and odd and innovative arrangements.


Headliners The Bitter Tears are purveyors of country swagger and formal waltzes with the ghost of Herb Alpert haunting the brass section. Pretty melodies are betrayed by absurd and surreal stories of the futility of life. Their creepy theatrical stage presence adds another level of dementia to the proceedings.


The Pussy Pirates, a Chicago/Ann Arbor group, take a punk template and twist it with unconventional arrangements and strange horn arrangements. They create an ecstatic and jittery dance music celebrating the body in all its icky and sexy charms of blood, guts and copulation. BE ON TIME! Make sure not to miss this amazing band!

Sonovachicken & Angels

Recently, a couple videos that I was involved in years ago have popped up on YouTube. The first is Sonovachicken by Piotr Tokarski.



This was filmed in an abandoned house that my roommate found somewhere around the corner from where we lived in Humboldt Park. For mysterious and unknown reasons, the inside of this house had a four-foot deep carpet of junk that spread over every room. Amazing junk! Typewriters! Sewing Machines! Film Projectors! Reel-to-reel tapes! Books! It was as if someone took an entire pawn shop and dumped it in this house for storage. Judging by the calanders, clothes and pornography that was strewn around, I would guess that all this crap was discarded around 1979. Aside from a couple syringes on the back deck, the place surprisingly had not become a junkie hideout. The only occupant was an old sick dog who would meekly raise his sad eyes up at us and walk away, hobbling over the piles of garbage. The building must have been heavily fortified for years and the only reason why my roommate found it was because they had started to tear down the surrounding wood fence for the building's demolition.

My roommate, who was a compulsive junk collector, made daily treks to the house, hauling home many treasures. He would often stay there until morning, digging through the depths of garbage. I only visited the place a couple times because honestly, in addition to it being in a real shitty neighborhood, the place was spooky. The basement seemed to have suffered a fire at one time, the plaster walls were peeled and cracking and every surface was covered in filth. There were still remnants of past occupants such as a suit hanging in the closet, dishes in the cupboards, and a kitchen table set up with chairs.

Another derelict building stood beside the junk house but it was inpenetrable. My roommate was determined to break in but could not find a way. He eventually laid a long plank out the window, connecting the two buildings. According to him, the sight inside the second building was more beguiling than the first- old clothes packed every room, a sea of moldy fabric almost as high as the ceiling. Unfortunately, no junk treasures, just clothes and mold spores.

This video is a funny little homage to the house, I suppose. I come home, beat the hell out of a chicken and hug the wife. We shot it in a couple hours...Piotr directed, I did the organ music and Wheat edited the sound and visuals.

The garbage paradise only lasted a couple weeks and soon the house of piles was bulldozed into a pile of rubble. Aside from a couple rolls of lost film and this video, we unfortunately did not document this peculiar dump.

Next up is a music video for Angels by Bobby Conn directed by Usama Alshaibi.



This video features plenty of mugging and facial cortortions by me. I can't really say I like narrative in music video so much, but this is such a ridiculous parody of early 80s videos that I can forgive it. And I look pretty good before I became all fat and bloated.

I was excited to take part in a Bobby Conn project as he has been a big inspiration to me since I moved to Chicago years ago. I first saw him perform with an ad hoc group opening for The Make-Up. With the band's mutant funk and Bobby's psychotic caterwauling, they blew the kitschy and derivative Make-Up off the stage. Bobby's music and aesthetic has changed over the years, going from no-wave/prog clang and clamor to David Bowie sweet balladry but he has always managed to bring his demented take to the table.

I had worked on a couple videos and films with Usama before (such as Fairyland). Usama and his wife Kristie used to run a small film festival called Z Film Fest that would focus on sexually deviant experimental shorts...something you don't get much of in the conservative Midwest. Usama recently finished up the documentary Nice Bombs about his travels back to his home country of Iraq amidst the turmoil of occupation.
